Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Guadalupe

Ramirez, MCDP

When I reflect on the reading from the prophet Zechariah, I am definitely filled with joy recognizing that this prophecy is radiantly fulfilled in the Guadalupe event which began in 1531 and continues until today. The prophet proclaims, “Sing and rejoice, O daughter Zion! See, I am coming to dwell among you, says the Lord. Many nations shall join themselves to the Lord on that day, and they will be his people, and he will dwell among you, and you shall know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you. The Lord will possess Juda as his portion in the holy land, and he will again choose Jerusalem. Silence all mankind, in the presence of the Lord! For he stirs forth from his holy dwelling.”

How can we not be silent when we contemplate the beautiful manifestation of God’s love for God’s people in the compassionate gaze of Our Lady of Guadalupe? How can we not rejoice in the depths of our soul as she holds us in the fold of her mantle of stars?

How can we not entrust all of our hopes, desires, sufferings, and disillusionments to God when we realize that in Guadalupe, Christ dwells among us and remains with us. Many nations beginning with the indigenous and Aztec inhabitants in Mexico together with the Spanish missionaries and the conquerors accepted her Son Jesus.

Do we need any other proof?

In the Gospel of Luke, we see Mary of Nazareth as a pilgrim virgin, taking her “yes” to the angel on pilgrimage to visit her cousin Elizabeth. Jesus, from the moment of his incarnation is in mission, prompting Mary to make the journey. I have always wondered what she must have been thinking and feeling on her way to Elizabeth’s house. Did she ponder the meaning of her experience with the angel and his message to her? Did she have any clue of the great encounter with her cousin that would inspire her to glorify the greatness of God when Elizabeth and John both respond to her greeting? John leaps in the womb and Elizabeth cried out, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.”

She expresses what all of us feel when we visit Our Lady of Guadalupe. We also feel and think and maybe even say it aloud: And how does this happen to me, that he mother of my Lord should come to me, to us, the lowliest of all people, the nobodies, the forgotten and ignored in our society as in the time of Juan Diego.  Mary loves all her children.  She always comes to our aid, especially in times of turmoil and suffering in our world.

How is it that in the encounter and mutual support of these two women God becomes one with us once more through the children in their wombs; One, the forerunner, prophet, and martyr, the other suffering servant and crucified and Risen Savior, Jesus, the Christ.  How is it that women all over the world find support and strength in our encounters with one another? Mary showers us with miracles of courage and wisdom that enable us create newness in our surroundings and bring hope to the men, women, and children who experience violence, are robbed of their human dignity and breathe the air of disregard and exploitation of mother earth.

My mother, Refugia, was one of these women. I was born premature and struggled for my life. My mother entrusted me to Our Lady of Guadalupe from the very beginning of my life. She held me close and with tears in her eyes, she told Our Lady, “You gave me this child. If you want to take her, I give her back to you. But if you leave her with me, I offer her to you so that she may serve you.” As you can see, Our Lady of Guadalupe answered my mother’s plea. My mom did not share this story with me until I was already professed in the congregation of the Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence of San Antonio, Tex.  Because she did not want to influence my life choice.

I can truthfully say, that my Mom has kept her promise to Our Lady of Guadalupe. I can never say no to anything she asks of me. I can never forget to be grateful for her giving me life and health. I can never stop marveling at the great things that God has done for me.

The Guadalupe apparitions are not just apparitions, Guadalupe is an event that embraces all of humanity, an event that keeps happening and gaining momentum in every place and in every heart that comes under her gaze.  She is the empress of the Americas. With Our Lady of Guadalupe, we need no words. She knows what is in our hearts. She understands what we need.  After all she promised to be here for us bringing her love in the person of her son, to give forth her compassion, help, and defense, to listen to our supplications and remedy all our miseries, pains, and sufferings. When Juan Diego agonized about his uncle’s near -death situation. “She told him, do not let your heart be troubled, do not be afraid of that illness, am I not here who am your mother?” These words ring out over time and space. These words are for us too, why are we so often afraid? Why do we think that we are alone in this world when problems and suffering assail us?

Why do we forget that she is our mother, that she is “the ever holy Virgin Mary, mother of the true God through whom one lives, the creator of heaven and earth.” These words by which she identified herself to Juan Diego are not words of weakness; they are words of power and strength. She knows who she is and what her mission is. She is the Christ-bearer, God’s ambassador and spokesperson, the missionary disciple par excellence.

She will not take “no” for an answer. When the bishop doubts the authenticity of Juan Diego’s story and her request for a temple, he returns downcast and dejected. He immediately believes that the bishop did not hear because she picked an unreliable, lowly servant. He does not want to be the obstacle to her mission, so he begs her to send a more noted, high-ranking official who has credibility and will be believed.

Does this sound familiar, how many of us attribute any of our ill-received messages to our own unworthiness? I have felt this way. How many of us are the reluctant prophets, or the runaway Jona when it comes to being given a mission we feel ill-equipped for?  She reminds us as she reminded Juan Diego, “of course I can choose anyone I please to be my ambassador, but I choose you.” She promises to recompense him for his labor. Her trust in him inspired him to spend the rest of his life guarding the image and re-telling the marvelous story of her encounter with him and all his people, an encounter that raised up a new race, a new nation devoted to her Son.

She continues to search for us, to desire encounters of love and compassion with us. She wants to lead us to encounters with her Son, encounters with one another that have meaning and purpose, that give us new strength new hope, new energy to bring birth and new life into the dark corners of our lives, our neighborhoods, our cities and faith communities.  The songs, dances, flowers, and fiestas we offer to her on her Feast day are our humble expressions of love and gratitude, of the loyalty and commitment we feel for her and her Son every day of the year.

How many of us believe we are unworthy, that we have nothing to contribute to the great enterprise of collaborating with Mary and her Son in spreading the love, justice, and peace of Christ’s kingdom?  Or how many of us have gifts and talents, successful careers, however, we are too busy, or we lack the love or desire to jump into the adventure because we have not been touched by the love of her Son, or it seems too big, too impossible, or just not important enough for us to change our own direction and follow Our Lady.

I have come to the conclusion that whenever I am presented with a new challenge, I want to ask “why me?” I need to change that and ask, “Why not me? “ So I ask you, “Why not you?”

¿Necesitamos alguna otra prueba?

Yo me he sentido así.
